One of must see in Ecuador is the Fiesta of the Mama Negra, which takes place in the city of Latacunga. The rival of Brasil’s carnivals is celebrated two times a year, during the last weekend in September, and in November.
The first time celebration is in homage to the “Virgen de las Mercedes”, who saved the town from eruption of Cotopaxi volcano in 1742.
During the midnight mass service (misa del gallo) the believers pay homage to the statue of Black Madonna, but the parade does not necessary follow the religious behaviors.
There are a lot of processions, fireworks, dances, costumes, masks and… drinking.

This tradition started to disappear in 60’s of the last century, and finally Cotopaxi Governor Virgilio Guerrero proposed reviving it by incorporating the festival into the celebrations
of Latacunga independence day.
The second parade usually takes place 11th of November, but the exact date is set by the local government, last year it was moved to Nov 30th, due to mourning after the tragic death of 13th years old boy.The fiesta is bigger and more colorful than the religious one. There are fireworks, military shows music and dances. The parade features not only Mama Negra, but also many of local personages such as the Angel of the Stars, the Moorish King, as well as Los Huacos.Candy and drinks are tossed to the crowds, milk and water sprayed on the spectators.
