Isla Santa Fe - Barrington Island
The small island (area of 24 sq km ) is located halfway from Santa Cruz to San Cristobal. It can be reached from Santa Cruz, by the boat within 2,5 hours. As it is wet landing area, the boats usually anchor in the bay and visitors reach the shore with panga. The island is relatively flat in the comparison to the rest volcanic isles, as it was formed rather by an uplift. The name of the island has been recently changed to Santa Fe after the Spanish town.
Plaza de la Independencia
Shadowed by the palm trees the Independence Square is the very heart of the Old City of Quito. Around the square are the sites of religious and political authorities, the powers that ruled Quito during Imperial period. The Square is dominated by the building of La Catedral Metropolitana situated on the Southern side. Opposite the cathedral there is the Archbishop’s Palace, and on the West the site of the government Presidential Palace. The last late of the square is occupied by the new building of Municipal Palace, built in 1978 on the site of the former one, to damaged to be rebuilt.
Semana Santa
The Holy Week (Semana Santa) begin on Palm Sunday ( Domingo de Ramos). All over Ecuador the belivers buy on market palm leafs and bring them to the church. On Shrove Thursday the families bring food and beverages to their relatives' graves on the local cemeteries, this custom is very similar to All Saints Day. On Good Friday through the streets of Quito runs the parade of flagellants hurting their bodies with scourges , men carrying big wooden crosses and disciplinants called 'cucuruchos'.

The present Cathedral replaced the former church built of wood and clay on the same spot.
The main building finished around 1565 has been three times renovated and rebuilt after damages caused by earthquakes ( the last in 1987 ).
